Timetable Please review the Weekend Timetable to understand your start time. You must have time for racking your bike and chip collection on race day – please arrive by 7:15am at the very latest. Race packet pick-up concludes at 7:45am for all events. It is a 1.5km walk to the Olympic start line, and a 1km walk to the Sprint start line – please leave the transition zone area by 7:55 am (Olympic) or 8:40 am (sprint).
Timing We are using chip timing. Pick your timing chip up from the registration desk race morning. You must wear your chip on you ankle for the race. The timing chips become active at 0830. Do not pass through the timing zones after 0830 unless you are racing. If you are waiting for your event to start, or are waiting for your relay team mate, use one of the non timed entrance/exit to transition. The chip will be collected as you cross the finish line.
Medical Write on the back of your bib any medical conditions you have that our Medical Team should be aware of.
Torso and Headset Rules This event is sanctioned by OAT, therefore the torso and headset rules are in effect. The Torso Rule is that all athletes must wear some sort of covering over their torso. For women this means at least a sports bra or some sort of top. For men this means a singlet, triathlon top or some sort of top. If you race bare-chested you are disqualified. Headsets (ie listening to music etc via a portable device with any kind of headset) is not allowed; if you race with a headset you are disqualified.
Relay Teams The swimmer/runner must exchange the timing chip with the biker in the transition zone at the start of the bike. The biker must stand beside his or her bike, with the bike racked on the bike rack. The biker must receive the timing chip from their swimmer/runner, place it on their ankle, then they can remove their bike from the rack and proceed out of the transition zone. When they return from their bike ride they must rack their bike, then remove the timing chip from their ankle and give it to their runner. The runner will then proceed out on the run course.
Swim The swim will be cancelled or shortened if the lake is wavy. Water temperatures in the past have such that wetsuits have been allowed. Wear the swim cap provided. Some athletes have identified they are allergic to the latex in the bathing cap. They are exempted from wearing swim caps. We will have a beach start this year. Seed yourself accordingly at the swim start. Fast swimmers at the front, slower swimmers at the back. Keep the buoys to your right as you swim.
For your safety, we have Kayaks in the water with extra lifejackets and lifeguards walking along the road. We have our race doctor, two paramedics equipped with resuscitation equipment, and an ambulance on site. If you need assistance, stop, take your swim cap off and wave it. You may swim into shore at any time, and if you do not want to continue your swim, you can continue your race in a non-competitive division.
Bike DRAFTING IS ILLEGAL!! YOU CAN BE NO CLOSER THAN 5 METERS (16 FEET) TO ANOTHER CYCLIST. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO STOP, GET OFF, THEN RESART YOUR BICYCLE ON THE FIRST OFFENCE. YOU WILL BE DISQUALIFIED ON YOUR SECOND OFFENCE. This is strictly enforced by officials on motorcycles. The entire bike course is open to vehicle traffic, so be careful. Helmets are required. Your helmet must be done up before you take your bike off the rack at the start until you return it to the rack at the end. Watch for the mount and dismount lines as indicated by the volunteers.
We recommend you bring at least a litre of fluid on your bike and some food such as an energy bar or gel. Do not litter the course. We want Brights Grove to invite us back again. Stick your wrappers back in your pocket.
The bike course is exceptionally well marked, with lots of volunteers. All the corners have been swept. There is a lead pace car.
Watch for children, cars and runners especially as you return to Brights Grove at the end of your ride. A trail vehicle will return cyclists to the start if they are unable to continue.
Run Maps for the olympic and sprint run courses are under the maps section. The Duathlon Run 1 courses are simple out- or out-and-back routes.
The Triathlon Run/Duathlon Run 2 goes along the lake; first west, then east. Six water stops are available on the olympic 10 km run, four on the sprint run. Washrooms are available at the Church (5.5 km and 8 km on the olympic 10 km run) and School. If you bring energy bars or gels on the run course, please dispose of them at the water stops. Do not litter the course. Your race number must be visible as you pass through the finish chute. Proceed through the finish line chute promptly to avoid interfering with other athletes finishing their race.
Post Race The post race meal is part of your race package. It is a single pass through. Athletes can gain entry to the buffet by showing their wrist bands; athletes’ hands will be marked to show they have passed through. Hotdogs, drinks, and cookies for family and friends, can be purchased for a small fee. The awards ceremony will start at noon or so in the finish line area.
The results will be available on the web at www.bluewatertriathlon.ca shortly following the race.
